The SMC Pentax-A 28-80mm f/3.5–4.5 is a manual-focus standard zoom lens introduced in the mid-1980s for the Pentax K-mount, designed as a versatile walkaround option for film SLRs. It was one of the few zooms in the A-series to receive Super Multi-Coating (SMC) and a more advanced 12-element - 9-group optical design, distinguishing it from the simpler, non-SMC Takumar-A and Pentax-A variants that shared the same focal range. The lens features a variable aperture from f/3.5 to f/4.5, stopping down to f/22–32, and uses a 5-blade automatic diaphragm. It focuses as close as 80cm, delivering a modest magnification ratio, and uses a 58mm filter thread. It weighs 355g, measures 63 × 75mm, and includes a manual aperture ring with an “A” setting, enabling full program and shutter-priority modes on compatible bodies. There’s no internal focusing or quick-shift, and the front element rotates during focusing—making polarizer use a bit tricky. It was typically sold with a hard case (HB-120) and clip-on plastic cap.
