The S-M-C / Super-Takumar 35mm f/2 is a fast M42-mount wide-angle prime produced by Asahi Optical Co. between 1963 and 1971, with the Super-Multi-Coated (S-M-C) version continuing into the early 1970s. It was the fastest 35mm lens in the Takumar lineup and came in several optical and mechanical variants, making it a fascinating study for collectors and shooters alike.
There are two main optical designs:
1. The early version (1963–1967) has a 67mm filter thread, weighs 398g, and uses a 5-blade diaphragm. It features an 8-element - 7-group design and focuses down to 45cm.
2. The later version (1967–1971), including the S-M-C Takumar, has a 49mm filter thread, weighs 240–242g, and uses a 6-blade diaphragm. It shares the same 8/7 optical formula but is more compact and includes open-aperture metering support in the S-M-C version.
All versions stop down to f/16, offer a 63° diagonal field of view on full-frame, and deliver 0.11–0.12× magnification. The S-M-C version includes Super-Multi-Coating for improved flare resistance and contrast, and features a square clip-on hood and rear element coating optimized for Spotmatic F and ES bodies.
