The Takumar 6×7 400mm f/4—later branded as Super-Takumar and Super-Multi-Coated (S-M-C) Takumar—is a manual-focus super-telephoto lens introduced in 1969 for the Pentax 6×7 medium format system. All three versions share the same optical formula and mechanical design, differing only in coatings and branding. With a diagonal field of view of 12.7°, it was designed for wildlife, sports, and distant landscape photography, offering long reach in a relatively compact form for its class. Optically, it features a 5-element - 5-group design with a 12-blade manual diaphragm, stopping down to f/45. The lens focuses as close as 8 meters, uses rear-mounted 77mm filters, and delivers a 0.0× magnification ratio—emphasizing its role as a reach-focused optic rather than a close-up tool. It includes a built-in sliding hood, tripod collar, and outer bayonet mount. It measures 115 × 287mm, weighs a hefty 2.57kg, and lacks internal focusing, weather sealing, or automatic diaphragm control (unlike the later M* 400 mm f/4 ED [IF]).
