Summary
The S-M-C / Super-Takumar 20mm f/4.5 is a rare and distinctive ultra-wide-angle prime produced by Asahi Optical Co. between 1968 and 1975 for M42 screw-mount cameras. It was one of the widest rectilinear lenses available at the time, offering a dramatic 94° diagonal field of view on full-frame—ideal for landscape, architecture, and creative perspective work.
There are two main versions: 1. The Super-Takumar (1968–1971): 11 elements in 10 groups, 5-blade diaphragm, 58mm filter thread, and a weight of 251g; 2. The Super-Multi-Coated (S-M-C) Takumar (1971–1975): Same optics, but with SMC coatings for improved contrast and flare resistance, and a slightly lighter build at 246g.
Both versions stop down to f/16, focus as close as 20cm, and deliver 0.13× magnification. Due to the bulbous front element, Pentax recommended using 77mm filters with a step-up ring to avoid vignetting, though the native thread is 58mm. A square clip-on hood was included, and the lens shipped in a dedicated hard case.
